EMDR -
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a very effective new psychotherapy technique. I got EMDR training so I could be more effective helping clients with traumatic memories, anxieties and fears that seem very fixed. It can also bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress. It is a shorter term treatment and significant change can happen in three to five sessions depending on the problems we are working with.
EMDR is designed to help the client reconnect with different modes of experience a disturbing memory or fear - the feelings, thoughts and beliefs and physical experience, and take the “sting” out of it. This dramatically relieves the troubling present day effects of past events.
How will EMDR work? We usually work in double sessions for EMDR. I will take a history, learn about you, your background and especially the disturbing memory, fear or block bringing you in. WeÍll discuss in detail how EMDR will work and determine if it is the right treatment for you. EMDR is more structured than typical psychotherapy. IÍll ask you focused questions about all elements of your memory or fear and direct you throughout the session. The client is in charge at all times during EMDR, choosing what to focus on, how far to go. You will learn relaxation methods before any processing and will work together to return you to a relaxed state after processing.
Then, EMDR “processing” begins. There are different ways to do
this processing. In one technique, I will sit across from you,
move my hand back and forth and tell you to follow my hand with
your eyes, while bringing to mind the moment or incident you have
chosen to focus on. This process, which may sound mysterious,
can truly unpack and resolve some very difficult inner obstacles
for clients body, mind and spirit.
